New CDC Timelines for Isolation and Quarantine

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has revised its timelines for quarantine and isolation periods for those who contract COVID-19 or are exposed to it. Why the change? Science. They have found most transmission occurs early, in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and a few days after. The new guidelines state:

  • If you test positive for COVID, the recommended time for isolation is 5 days (down from 10, so long as symptoms have resolved), followed by 5 days wearing a mask around others. This is for everyone, regardless of vaccination status.

  • If you are vaccinated, boosted, and exposed to COVID-19: No quarantine required. Wear a mask for 10 days, then test on day 5.

  • If you are unvaccinated and exposed to COVID-19: quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days.
